BOARD GAMES
CHECKERS
2 players. 10–30 minutes. A straightforward game of diagonal movement and captures. Pieces advance across the board and are “kinged” upon reaching the far side. Easy to learn in minutes, yet surprisingly tactical.
CHESS
2 players. 20–60+ minutes. A classic battle of foresight and calculation. Each side commands an army with distinct movement styles, working to protect their king while cornering the opponent’s. Chess rewards patience and long-term planning. Best for those who enjoy deep thinking and quiet intensity.
GO
2 players. 20–60+ minutes. Using only black and white stones, players take turns placing pieces on the board to build territory and surround their opponent. The rules are simple. The depth is vast. Go feels calm on the surface but becomes profoundly strategic over time.
SHOGI
2 players. 30–60 minutes. Often called Japanese chess, Shogi introduces a twist: captured pieces can return to the board under your control. This creates constant momentum shifts and creative comebacks. The game feels fluid and adaptive, with fewer permanent losses.
MAHJONG
4 players (best). 45–90 minutes. Played with beautifully carved tiles, Mahjong combines memory, probability, and quick pattern recognition. Players draw and discard tiles to complete a winning hand. More social than chess, more energetic than Go — Mahjong shines with conversation and tea.
